The opening of the Peace and Justice Center in Pacific Grove in April 2004 followed nearly forty years of peace advocacy in Monterey County by groups such as Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, United Nations Association, Sane-Freeze, Veterans for Peace, and more. The Peace Coalition of Monterey County, a promoter of the center, is composed of twenty-four local organizations.
The Center has up-to-date information on peace and justice events and organizations in the community. It is a community resource sharing educational materials relating to war and peace, democracy, non-violence, sustainability and other matters of social justice. It provides a lending library of books, DVDs and video-tapes and is a gathering place and a meeting space for small groups.
The Peace and Justice Center seeks to promote coalition-building with environmental, human rights and labor groups. It is designed to promote a culture of peace and justice in our own community and the world.
The Peace and Justice Center happily accepts donations of used public interest films or books on peace and justice topics. DVDs can be previewed at the Center before they are checked out.
The Peace and Justice Center is considering creating a directory of local businesses that are supportive/friendly to the peace and justice movement. Suggestions? Maybe you have such a business? Contact jturner215@comcast.net .
